What Is Stephen Ministry?
It is a confidential ministry that trains lay persons in our congregation to "walk"
with someone going through a difficult circumstance or major life change. It's one
more way we can serve God with our "Head, Heart and Hands."
What do Stephen Ministers do at Fairlawn Nazarene?
- Visit another person regularly and dependably, and offer Christian support.
- Commit to and practice keeping private information confidential.
- Participate in regular support and supervision from a trained Stephen Leader.
- Provide distinctively Christian one-to-one care.
Who can be referred to Stephen Ministry?
- A person going through a terminal illness.
- Someone caring for a dying family member.
- Someone grieving a death or serious loss.
- A parent of a special needs child.
- Those homebound or living in nursing homes.
- Someone facing a job crisis.
- Someone facing a long-term or terminal illness.
- A person going though a divorce.
- Someone facing a spiritual crisis.
- A mother (or father) experiencing a birth or adoption.
- Someone facing a life transition or crisis.
What situations are not appropriate for a Stephen Minister to provide care? Stephen
Ministers do not provide care for:
- Minors.
- Couples, families, or other groups.
- Those suffering serious mental or
Emotional disturbances.
- Those with personality disorders.
- Those suffering severe depression.
- Extreme manipulators.
- Those dealing with abuse issues.
- Substance abusers or chemically dependent persons.
- Those exhibiting suicidal behavior.
